IVORY PARK TAXI DRIVER GRADUATES WITH FLYING COLORS
Meet Pelican Khumalo. Everyday he wakes up as early as 3am and only heads home at 9pm if not later. He is a taxi driver that travels the route of Ivory Park 3 (Score) to Rivonia everyday.
What you might not know is that when he is not driving passengers to work and back and his taxi is ‘binding’ (waiting in line for passengers for his turn to ferry passengers). He builds his future by going to nearby Randburg Library. He resumes his taxi duties when he gets a call from the Queue Marshal.
Pelican began his studies in 2016 and graduated in record time. He was using his taxi driver wages to fund his studies.
On Tuesday the 12th of November 2019, Pelican graduated with a BSC in Education from the University of South Africa (UNISA). He is now a qualified teacher of the Intermediate and Senior Phases and can teach children from Grade 4 to 9.
Asked about how he did it, Mr. Khumalo said “Good time management skills is important. If you want something hard enough you will definitely get it. You need to prioritise and make sacrifices “.
For the year 2020, Pelican wants to start a new page in his life. He is looking for a teaching job and can teach Maths, IsiZulu, Life Orientation and Social Sciences.
Congratulations to Pelican Khumalo. His story is inspiring and proves that everything is possible. If you can dream it, you can do it!
