CLOSURE OF SHEBEENS OPERATING NEAR SCHOOLS

The Gauteng Liqour Act prohibits taverns/shebeens/night clubs or any other establishment that sells alcohol to be near a church, school or public transport facility.

According to Section 30 (3) of the Gauteng Liqour Act “the Gauteng Liqour Board shall grant an application in the case of premises NOT situated within a radius of 500m in the vicinity of a place of worship, educational institution, similar licensed premises,…public transport facility”

The Gauteng Department of Education received a petition from the Kempton Park community alleging that there’s a shebeen operating close to Cresslawn Primary School.

The GDE has requested that this be looked into by the Gauteng Liqour Board as it has jurisdiction in matters of this nature. The MEC of Education Panyaza Lesufi is on a mission to shut down all liqour outlets that are near schools. His also on a personal mission to create an #AlcoholFreeSA as can be seen by his Twitter feed @Lesufi.

In addition, President Cyril Ramaphosa made a commitment in his State of the Nation Address that “we are resolute that all taverns, shebeens and liqour outlets near school premises must be shut down”.
