TSWELOPELE MAN IMPRISONED FOR 15 YEARS AFTER STABBING HIS GIRLFRIEND TO DEATH
The Acting Station commander of the Ivory Park SAPS, Colonel Baba Mpotoane, has welcomed the recent lengthy sentence handed to a Tswelopele man for 2019 murder of his then live in girlfriend and mother of his three children.
According to the Ivory Park Police spokesperson, Captain Ben Matimulane; “On the morning of 01 January 2019, the 38 year old man stabbed his girlfriend 28 times at their rented room in Tswelopele, accusing her of having disrespected his culture by opening his whiskey. The man claimed that his culture didn’t allow a woman to open a man’s whiskey.”
“He stabbed her twice, she fell down apologising, and continued to stab her. She was certified dead at the scene, leaving behind three children aged three months and 12 years. He was this past Thursday sentenced by the Tembisa Magistrate Court to 15 years direct imprisonment. He had been in custody for the past two years.” added Matimulane.
Colonel Mpotoane said that the convicted man, Thabiso Sobekwa, 38, deserved what came his way as his cruelty has denied his innocent children their mother’s love.
“We welcome this sentence as it will send clear message to any spouse with abusive tendencies that our officers will go all out in ensuring that justice is served on behalf of the victim,” said Colonel Mpotoane.
Colonel appeals to anyone in an abusive relationship to let those close to them know of the situation they are in, and for families and close ones to assist in informing the police as gender based violence tends to take place in homes.
