ESKOM EXTENDS DEADLINE FOR PREPAID METER RECODING
Eskom has announced a crucial update regarding the recoding of prepaid electricity meters to Key Revision Number 2 (KRN2).
Due to a recent technological breakthrough, Eskom has granted an extension beyond the original 24 November 2024 deadline for zero buyers—customers who haven’t purchased electricity in over six months.
This extension allows zero buyers to upgrade their meters by purchasing electricity from authorised vendors, ensuring continued functionality. You will need to buy electricity immediately and visit Eskom offices from 25-29 November 2024 to complete recoding.
Key Points of the Update:
• Deadline Extension: Zero buyers with active meters can now update their meters beyond the 24 November 2024 deadline.
• Mandatory Update: All customers need to convert their meters from KRN1 to KRN2.
After 24 November, meters still using KRN1 will not accept new tokens, leading to power loss and costly meter replacement (up to R12,000).
How to Check If Your Meter Is Updated:
- Enter the code 1844 6744 0738 4377 2416 on your prepaid meter’s keypad.
- The The screen will display either 1 or 2:
• 1 or 1.2: Your meter needs to be recoded.
• 2 or 2.2: Your meter is already updated and requires no further action.
Steps to Recode Your Meter:
- Purchase an electricity token from an approved retailer.
- Enter the first 20 digits of the recode token.
- Enter the second 20 digits of the recode token.
- Enter the 20-digit token from your latest electricity purchase to recharge your meter.

Important Reminder:
All customers must recode their meters before the deadline to avoid losing power. Ensure you purchase tokens from authorised vendors only. This initiative aims to streamline the electricity distribution system and prevent unauthorised usage.
