The African National Congress (ANC) community meeting to listen to the party’s Ward Councillor Candidates in Ward 111 collapsed. The ANC held a meeting yesterday, 24 June 2021, for members and supporters of the organisation to participate in the Ward Councillor selection process.
The meeting was scheduled to be held at 16:00 but started more than an hour late. The meeting was supposed to be held at the Ponelopele Oracle Secondary School hall. Due to COVID-19 regulations, a decision was made for the meeting to be held at the school’s soccer field instead. More than 100 members of the community attended the ANC’s community meeting. There seemed to be interest in the Ward Councillor selection process amongst ordinary community members.
The meeting started by the Ward Councillor Candidates introducing themselves. The candidates are Johannes Seepe, a member of the SGB in Ponelopele Oracle Secondary School; Raisibe Matsemela, Ward 111’s current councillor; Nomabali Kapiyane, a Kaalfontein resident and Nontuthuzelo Supe, the youngest and most promising candidate.
The candidates were meant to answer 4 questions and questions by the community. The meeting ended up being chaotic and the candidates did not receive an opportunity to answer the questions.
The meeting could not proceed as some members of the community did not let the candidates speak. What’s more disturbing is that some members of the community came to the meeting drunk. There was even a physical fight after the meeting had been adjourned by the ANC leadership.
Registered voters that are members and supporters of the ANC will have an opportunity to vote for their preferred candidate on Sunday, 27 June 2021. Votes will be cast at Ponelopele Oracle Secondary School, Ebony Park Primary School and Umqhele Comprehensive School.
