ANC COUNCILLORS SEND PETITION TO ESKOM

The electricity crisis continues in Ivory Park, Ebony Park and Kaalfontein with no end in sight. Today, 17 August 2020, African National Congress (ANC) Councilors sent a letter to Eskom assuring the Power Utility that the areas are safe for technicians to resume their duties and replace failed transformers.

Thousands of households have been in the dark due to power outages caused by transformer failures in KAE and surrounding areas. After numerous calls logged with Eskom, protest action and marching to Eskom Megawatt Park the electricity has still not been restored. Parts of Kaalfontein have not had electricity for more than three months.

Yesterday afternoon, parts of KAE were also disconnected without any explanation or notice from Eskom. It is now more than 24 hours these communities have been in the dark without any explanation forthcoming.

The letter sent to Eskom by the Councilors, which KAE News has seen, requests Eskom to “speed up reconnecting and accessing the faulty areas as a matter of urgency.” The petition is signed by the councilors of Ward 77, Yoliswa Twala; Ward 78, Stephen Makamo; Ward 79, Thompson Maluleka; Ward 92, Violet Chauke; Ward 111, Raisibe Matsemela and Ward 133, Clr Julia Gololo.

The last update received by the the governing party in Johannesburg was a statement issued on the 22nd of July 2020 titled “ANC GREATER JOHANNESBURG REGION ENGAGEMENTS WITH ESKOM AND CONDEMNS ATTACKS ON COUNCILLORS IN ESKOM SUPPLIED AREAS”

The statement read “ANC in Greater Johannesburg Region together with its’ councillors have initiated an engagement process with the Minister of Public Enterprise, Cde Pravin Gordhan and the Group CEO of Eskom, Mr André de Ruyter on the electricity challenges faced by the people of Johannesburg”

The ANC Regional Head of Media and Communication, Sasabona Manganye was not available for comment at the time of publishing to update us on that “engagement process”.
