CALL FOR COMMUNITY TO HANDOVER GUNS

Ivory Park Station Commander Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo is calling on the local community, especially those in possession of unwanted firearms, to use the current firearm amnesty process to hand in those firearms.

“We strongly encourage anyone in possession of an illegal firearm or ammunition to use this amnesty period to hand them in, and those who are no longer interested in owning their lawfully acquired firearms to do so. At the heart of this process is to reduce the number of firearms- both legal and illegal- in circulation,” said Brigadier Ngcobo

The firearm amnesty process is an effort by the South African Police Service aimed at turning the tide against the proliferation of illegal firearms in the country. Remember most of the illegal firearms were once legal, before ending up in the hands of wrong people. The firearm amnesty period ends on 31 May 2020.

This amnesty will grant indemnity to anyone who surrenders illegal firearms or ammunition against prosecution only for the unlawful possession of such.

For more information on the process, the residents of the Ivory Park policing precinct, Ivory Park, Kaalfontein, Ebony Park and others are encouraged to contact the Ivory Park SAPS on 011 990 9600 or alternatively pay the station a visit where a designated firearm officer should be able to take them through the process of handing in an illegally possessed or unwanted firearms.

Furthermore to ensure that the whole process is working as efficiently as possible and user friendly, the SAPS national office has established a 24 hour Central Firearm Registry Desk for anyone to get clarity on any question they may have in relation to the amnesty process call 012 352 6111.
