Vorna Valley – City Power, the City of Johannesburg power utility, disconnected power in several residential complexes in the north of Midrand on Monday 13 February 2023, due to outstanding electricity bills. The action was aimed at recovering over R37 million in unpaid bills from key customers and residential areas.
City Power cut off electricity in the Silver Stream Estate in Halfway Gardens, which owes R9 million. A business in Randjespark was also disconnected, with White View Investments in arrears of almost R5 million. Thirty First Investments in Allandale and Cedar Roc Body Corporation in Vorna Valley were also disconnected, with outstanding bills of R4 million and R2.9 million, respectively.
City Power says it will continue its operations against those who haven’t paid, as it is concerning that tenants are paying rent every month but not paying for the services they receive from the city. “That’s why we are here, and we will continue to intensify these operations, especially around these complexes in Midrand, so they are at least able to also pay,” said City Power spokesperson, Isaac Mangena.
This action is a departure from the utility’s typical disconnections, which typically occur in townships like Ivory Park, Kaalfontein, and Rabie Ridge due to illegal connections. The fact that City Power has now targeted residential complexes in a more affluent area highlights the seriousness of the situation and the need for residents to pay their electricity bills.
In conclusion, City Power is taking strong action to recover outstanding bills and ensure that all residents pay their fair share for the services they receive. It is important for all residents to take responsibility for paying their electricity bills and contributing to the sustainability of the city’s infrastructure and services.
