Coming after the widely reported femicide, gender based violence and sexual offenses last week. The recent Crime Statistics show 179,683 crimes against women and 45,229 crimes against children were committed with males being the biggest perpetrators.
The crimes against women and children include murder, attempted murder, assault GBH, Common assault and sexual offenses.
Sexual offences are sexual activities that a person has not consented to, and it can refer to a broad range of sexual behaviours that make a victim feel uncomfortable, frightened or threatened. Sexual offences include the following crimes: rape, sexual assault, attempted sexual assault and contact sexual offenses.
Sexual Offenses increased by 4,6% which is 2,312 cases to 52 420. Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape and Eastern Cape were the biggest contributors to sexual offense cases.
Rape increased by 1,548 to 41,583 cases. Majority of victims were females aged between 20-29. Orange Farm Police Station recorded the highest rape cases in Gauteng.
Today, the 13th of February 2019. Women (and some men) held a peaceful protest in Africa’s richest square mile Sandton City. The protest indicates that crimes against women have increased to an unacceptable level. Protesters handed over a Memorandum to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) CEO Nicky Newton-King. She accepted the memorandum and promised the GBV protesters a reply within 7 days.
