Ebony Park Primary School learners received food parcels on Tuesday, 4 August 2020.
The food parcel handover was part of the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) by the Department of Basic Education.
The programme not only feeds 9,4 million children nationwide, it is also aimed at teaching them a healthy lifestyle.
The food parcels include vegetables. All learners in poorer Primary and Secondary Schools benefit from the programme even during the National Lockdown were learners are not going to school.
The NSNP aims to enhance the learning capacity of learners through the provision of a healthy meal at schools. Where it is implemented, like Ebony Park Primary School, the programme has shown to improve punctuality, regular school attendance, concentration and the general wellbeing of participating learners.
Whilst learners are being provided with nutritious meals, they are also taught to establish and maintain good eating and lifestyle habits for life.
The leftover food was given to needy learners to eat at home.
