Four suspects from Ivory Park and Tembisa alleged to be responsible for two business robberies at the Busy Corner Mall, Ebony Park, are expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court to answer to those charges soon.
The Pick n Pay Liqour at the mall was attacked by an armed gang on the night of the 28th of January 2022. Robbers got away with an undisclosed amount of cash and liqour and shot at two civilians.
“The four were arrested at the weekend by the Ekurhuleni District Trio Task Team who have been working almost nonstop since the robbery was committed a fortnight ago. Two of the suspects were arrested in Ivory Park Extension 2 and the other two in Tembisa” said Captain Ben Matimulane, the spokesperson of Ivory Park SAPS.
“During further investigations into the robberies, police managed to find two firearms and 15 rounds of live ammunition from one of the suspects at his rented place in Norkem Park, Kempton Park. The serial numbers of those firearms had been erased. The suspect found in possession of the firearms has already appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court.” Matimulane added.
The suspects, whose ages range from 30 to 50, are all repeat offenders and they have all been, over and above the robberies, charged with a murder case as well. One person was accidentally shot during the robbery, allegedly by one of the robbers. The recovered firearms will be taken to the SAPS’s Ballistics Division to ascertain in which other crimes were they used.
The Station Commander of the Ivory Park SAPS, Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, has welcomed this breakthrough. “We believe that our local businesses will experience some form of relief, owing to the incarceration of these four. The public should rest assured that further investigations into this robberies and these suspects are continuing.”
Brigadier Ngcobo is further calling on members of the public to continue to be the eyes and ears of the police as we all want to create safer communities, and this cannot be achieved without the participation of the residents.
