For more than three decades, Gogo Nofezile Maqokolo has been renting in people’s backyards and living in informal settlements to be closer to her place of work.
After bringing her plight to the attention of the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Geoffrey Makhubo at the Ivory Park North Hall during a public meeting in February 72-year-old Gogo Maqokolo is finally going to have a roof over her head.
On the Mayoral Imbizo Gogo told the Mayor that she would like a roof over her head as she was living in a shack with her two unemployed children.
The City of Johannesburg’s Housing Department swiftly responded to her challenges and she is now the beneficiary of Transitional Residential Unit (TRA) in Ivory Park Extension 9 (Joe Slovo Section).
Mayor Makhubo handed over the house key to Gogo Maqokolo on Mandela Day, Saturday, 18 July 2020. The Mayor was joined by the MMC of Health and Social Development and Housing, Clr Eunice Mgcina and Mlungisi Mabaso respectively.
The house was donated by Riaphela General Services. The house has a kitchen, bedroom and living room. Household appliances and a bed where also donated to Gogo.
The Mayor said that “Ivory Park should be an Ivory. It was aspirational when in the early 90s they called it Ivory Park. It’s our government’s responsibility to turn the area into a real Ivory.”
Ivory Park is celebrating 30 years in existence on the 29th of September and KAE News has something special planned to celebrate this important milestone for the township.
