HANDOVER OF HOUSES IN CLAYVILLE

The MEC for Human Settlements, Urban Planning and CoGTA, Lebogang Maile, handed over 340 brand new housing units in Clayville Mega Human Settlement on Wednesday, 14 April 2021.

The homes were handed over on Wednesday afternoon to qualifying beneficiaries comprising of senior citizens, youths from child-headed households and people with physical disabilities.

The Gauteng Provincial Government has tackled itself to tackle the major housing backlog in the province. Due to in-migration and rapid urbanisation Gauteng has a backlog of more than 1 million with some citizens being on the housing waiting list since 1996.

Maile used the handover ceremony as an opportunity to condemn the recent land invasions in Rabie Ridge. The MEC admitted that the land invasion in Rabie Ridge demonstrates the magnitude of the problem that the government faces in respect of the housing backlog. He however appealed to residents for patience.

Koko Dimakatso (69) was one of the beneficiaries of a housing unit in Clayville. The Gogo has been living at a welfare centre since 2011. She was delighted that she has finally received a home after waiting for more than 14 years.

Maile also addressed corruption in the government housing value chain and urged members of the community to report any official or unscrupulous member of the public asking them for money in return for an RDP house.
