ILLEGAL DUMPING ON THE RISE IN KAE

From the 11th of January 2021, the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) waste management company, Pikitup, announced that it will no longer be collecting the old dustbins and plastic bags.

Illegal dumping has been on the rise in Kaalfontein, Allandale, Ebony Park (KAE) and surrounding areas. This is mainly caused by Pikitup employees not collecting the old dustbins and refuse bags.

The community can’t be blamed for the pollution. Most people don’t throw away waste because they want to. The illegal dumping is a result of waste from many households not being collected.

The roll out of the dustbins was ineffective. COJ didn’t inform households of the process of collecting the new 240L bins. It was left to KAE News to inform the community about the venue and dates for the collection of the bins.

KAEns, including the elderly, had to wait in long queues at the Ebony Park Pay Point, Kaalfontein (blue and white tent) and Ivory Park North Hall. This happened during the COVID-19 pandemic with no social distancing in place.

It is not clear why Pikitup didn’t just deliver the new bins door to door?
