IVORY PARK COUPLE BEHIND BARS FOR MURDER

IVORY Park police have on Sunday arrested a couple from Extension Nine, Ivory Park for allegedly assaulting to death a local man accused of house breaking and theft.

The husband and wife were arrested yesterday after the police were made aware, and followed up on the information, that a suspected thief has been taken to an address where he was likely to be assaulted. Some of the tools strongly believed to have been used during the assault have been confiscated by the police and will be used as part of the evidence. The suspected thief and victim is 26 years old.

The couple had earlier opened a case of housebreaking and theft. It is said that during further investigations they managed to find some of the stolen items and the person responsible- the suspect who was eventually killed. The suspect was hunted down, found and taken to an address where he was assaulted until he became unconscious. It was only when the family came that he was found lying naked on the street and was taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The couple was taken in following a gathering of witness statements and the kind of evidence the police were able to gather at the scene.

The station commander of the Ivory park SAPS, Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, has condemned this incident, saying it was not necessary and should have no place in our society as we should all be governed by the rule of law.

“The couple did well by opening a case when their property was stolen. They should have continued to work with us after the property was recovered, filling us in about the circumstances under which it was recovered. This death and the accompanying pains for families involved would not have happened,” said Brigadier Ngcobo.

The two are expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court soon to face a charge of murder and defeating the ends of justice.
