The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) plans to replicate the development gains achieved in Soweto to other parts of the City particularly in Ivory Park amongst others.
The City has provisioned monies for the construction of public transport facilities, water infrastructure and the tarring of roads among other plans in Ivory Park, Orange Farm and Kliptown.
The CoJ Council on Thursday, 27 May 2021, approved the 2021/22 Budget of approximately R73.3 Billion which will see the City focus on strategic priority infrastructure Turnkey projects in poor areas that include Ivory Park.
The Budget was presented by the Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Finance, Cllr Jolidee Matongo during his Budget Speech at the 48th Ordinary Council on Tuesday as part of the 2021/22 – 2023/24 Medium Term Budget.
Residents of Ivory Park will finally have substantial improvement of basic infrastructure as the City of Johannesburg plans to invest billions of rand in an effort to replicate its gains made in Soweto as a whole.
Ivory Park and surrounding areas have been allocated R331 million for “multi-disciplinary Turnkey projects” over the medium term.
Additional investment in the area includes:
- R203 million for JOSHCO’s social housing Turnkey project
- R18 million Capex for Community Development to continue with construction of a swimming pool in the township
- Community Development has further been allocated R144 million for the upgrading of facilities and the construction of multipurpose centres across the City including in Kaalfontein.
- Johannesburg Development Agency is allocated a Capex of R30 million for the “Ivory Park Development Catalytic Node Infrastructure Projects”
- Johannesburg Roads Agency will also ensure the tarring of roads in Kaalfontein.
- The Budget will cover Youth Skills Training and the establishment of Opportunity Centres in Ivory Park and Orange Farm.
“These are projects that are central to increasing the City’s economic nodes in-line with our GDS socio-economic and spatial transformation agenda,” said Clr Matongo.
