As New Year’s Eve draws near, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) is urging residents to handle fireworks responsibly to ensure safety for everyone during the festive celebrations.
The By-Law Management Unit (BMU), represented by spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla, has outlined important regulations regarding the use of fireworks within the City of Johannesburg.
Fireworks Usage Regulations:
Fireworks are allowed on specific days only, including:
• Guy Fawkes Day
• Diwali
• Christmas Eve
• Day of Goodwill
• New Year’s Eve
• New Year’s Day
Permitted Times:
• Fireworks can be used between 19:00 and 22:00 on the designated days.
• On New Year’s Eve, fireworks are allowed from 23:00 to 01:00.
Prohibited Locations:
Fireworks cannot be set off in the following areas:
• Public spaces such as schools, hospitals, and old-age homes.
• Within 500 meters of petrol stations or explosives factories.
• Near areas where animals are present, such as animal shelters.
Penalties for Non-Compliance:
• Using fireworks outside the permitted times: R500 fine.
• Lighting fireworks in areas where animals are present: R1000 fine.
Additional Guidelines:
• Only individuals with a valid license may sell or deal in fireworks.
• Children under the age of 16 must not use fireworks without adult supervision.
• The JMPD urges residents to be considerate of their neighbors, especially in densely populated areas.
JMPD officers will be monitoring compliance throughout the festive period. Violators will face fines, and illegal fireworks will be confiscated.
Superintendent Fihla emphasized the importance of celebrating responsibly and respecting the by-laws to ensure a safe and enjoyable festive season for all.
