From the open field next to Rabie Ridge all the way to Glen Austin and wider to Phomolong by 6 o’clock in the evening nearly all unused land had been illegally subdivided amongst the hundreds of people who had been camped there.
Earlier last week the infamous Red Ants had been sent by the government to evict the people but on the rainy Tuesday they were at it again.
One land grabber who spoke on condition of anonymity to KAE News said “ they can come and remove us today but tomorrow we will be here again.
This is our land and we are not going anywhere “.
UPDATE: People have been evicted once again from the vacant Land which is reportedly owned by the University of Witwatersrand. Dozens of people have been left stranded as some had already bought corrugated iron and building material to build shacks. Other squatters had even paid ‘Community Leaders’ fees to occupy the vacant land.
A family of 4 was R5000 out of pocket after paying the fee and purchasing building material.
The land issue is a ticking time bomb and the government should resolve the crisis as soon as possible.
