LEARNER’S STRIKE FOR CHAIRS TURNS VIOLENT

Two (2) learners have been injured by rocks as the protest action for school furniture continues.

Learners from David Makhubo Secondary School in Kaalfontein abandoned class and took to the streets on Thursday morning.

Learners are striking for the lack of chairs and desks at the schools causing hundreds of learners to spend most of the school day sitting on the floor.

Students from David Makhubo went to nearby schools of JB Matabane Secondary School, Kaalfontein Secondary School and Ponelopele Oracle Secondary School demanding the schools release the learners to join in the strike.

The group of students are currently at Eqinisweni Secondary School demanding that those students be also released. Eqinisweni learners started the protest action on Monday and chairs and desks were delivered by the Gauteng Department of Education on the following day.

Hundreds more students can be seen loitering all over KAE and Ivory Park.

The nearby school’s grievance is that Monday’s strike started by Eqinisweni was joined by neighbouring schools. However, when the chairs were delivered to the school, Eqinisweni learners are now unwilling to join.

11:01 Learners from other schools are currently throwing rocks at Eqinisweni learners which have left two children badly injured.

The situation is volatile.
