LIFE BEHIND BARS FOR DUMI MASILELA’S KILLERS

The five men from Ivory Park and Tembisa convicted of murdering Rhythm City actor, Dumisani Masilela, five years ago have each been sentenced to life imprisonment.

Bongani John Masombuka, 34, of Tembisa; Sfundo Harrison Nkosi, 30; Khumbuzo Solomon Mukhuba, 27; Brian Makhubedu, 24 and Mashudu Malema, 31, all from Ivory Park appeared in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on Wednesday in connection with the 2017 murder of Masilela.

Masilela was shot in the abdomen during a failed hijacking and managed to drive himself to Tembisa Hospital where he later died.

Judge Mosopa said he found no compelling reason to impose a sentence lighter than life imprisonment. Last week Friday, Mosopa found the five men guilty of murdering Masilela.

While delivering the guilty verdict on Friday, Judge Mosopa said the five had engaged in an “orgy of criminal activities” after having hijacked another car before attempting to hijack Masilela.

Dumi Masilela’s mother, Sabata Masilela testified to the court earlier in the week that the death of her son had affected her.
She told the court that she lost her teaching job at Eqinisweni Secondary School because she was ineffective. Ironically, some of the convicts also studied at the same school in Ivory Park.

“Those who showed no mercy to my son, taking his life in a cold blooded manner, causing a young bride to be a widow, that they shall pay the price for their barbaric act” said Dumi’s mother who testified in aggravation of sentence.
