LOAD REDUCTION IS BACK

Eskom’s discriminatory system of load reduction in “high density areas” is back. Load reduction is implemented by the power utility in high density areas to avoid overloading and transformer failure. The load reduction is implemented in areas with instances of illegal connections and meter bypassing.

The load reduction is implemented during peak times of 17:00 to 22:00 and 05:00 to 09:00 in the morning. The reduction is only implemented in black townships unlike load shedding which is implemented across the country for only 2 hours (as at 19 January 2021).

The Gauteng MEC of Education, Panyaza Lesufi, has criticised the power utility. Lesufi called Eskom reckless for switching off electricity in poor areas. He added that the power outages also affect schooling in the areas.

Gauteng Eskom spokesperson, Reneiloe Semenya, has defended the load reduction system saying that the power utility unfortunately doesn’t have infrastructure to exclude schools and the system is implemented in areas where households don’t pay for electricity.

Parts of Kaalfontein, Ebony Park, Ivory Park, Rabie Ridge, Tswelopele and Lindokuhle will experience Load Reduction on Friday, 22 January 2021, from 05:00 to 09:00.
