MASHABA OPENS M2 BRIDGE

The Outgoing Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba, reopened the M2 motorway today the 31st of October 2019.

This is after a necessary extensive rehabilitation which cost R160 million.

The occasion was attended by the Member of Parliament, Honorable Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, Gauteng Premier, David Makhura, Speaker of the CoJ Council Clr Vasco Da Gama, MMC for Transport Nonhlanhla Makhuba and board members of Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA).

The occasion was a culmination of hard work by engineers and construction workers led by JRA. The bridge was closed in August 2018 and will officially open on Monday the 4th November 2019.

The M2 motorway was closed between Crown Interchange and Maritzburg Streets. The bridge links the West and the East of Johannesburg. A number of motorists were affected in this regard and had to make alternative arrangements and routes. It was a source of frustrations for Jozi motorists.

The bridge carries 10,500 vehicles per hour and was already over 60 years which means it has outlasted the average age of bridge structures.

“The reopening of the M2 motorway will be a relief to road users as many had to endure heavy traffic daily. The safety of road users is our priority hence the major rehabilitation work on it “ said the JRA Managing Director, Siyabonga Nodu.

During the construction 57 local community members and 7 SMME contractors were employed.

Mashaba thanked the CoJ coalition partners and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) for their dedication in delivering the dignity of change to more than 5 million Jozi residents.

Come Monday. The M2 will finally be open to motorists.
