The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Geoff Makhubo officially launched the “120 Days of Service Delivery” programme in Ivory Park on Tuesday, 13 April 2021.
The Mayor was accompanied by the MMCs for Transport, Cllr Nonhlanhla Makhuba; MMC for Health and Social Development, Cllr Eunice Mgcina; MMC for Economic Development, Cllr Lawrence Khoza and MMC for GCSS, Cllr Loyiso Masuku and other City officials.
The focus of the visit was mainly on service delivery in the City, “a return to basics and tougher by-law enforcement”.
The Mayor started the programme at the Ivory Park North Hall were he visited stalls by Pikitup, Johannesburg Water and other CoJ entities. Thereafter, the Mayor visited Thutlwa Street behind Ivory Park Secondary School. Makhubo with the MMC for Transport, Nonhlanhla Makhuba, promised community members that the gravel road in Extension 13 will be tarred before the end of December 2021.
The Mayor’s convoy then proceeded to Riverside Road where Johannesburg Water has commenced with Phase 1 and 2 of the sewer upgrade project. Johannesburg Water is busy on the site unblocking storm water drains. The drains in the area are blocked as a result of littering and lead to a risk of flooding. The Sewer Upgrade Project is underway in Ivory Park. Johannesburg Water will be using jet missions to check for any further blockages in the storm water and will be flushing away all the dirt. The Mayor then rolled up his sleeves and joined the Johannesburg Roads Agency to patch a pothole in Rolihlahla Street.
The community of Chris Hani Informal Settlement was delighted when the Mayor visited the area later in the day. The informal settlement has been one of the many informal settlements in Ivory Park without electricity. The area was recently electrified by Eskom and City Power. According to CoJ, the delivery of electricity to informal settlements has been progressing well with 3,191 houses electrified in the past financial year.
The Mayor’s last stop was to handover a house to Mr. Enock Ndima of Ward 77. Mr Ndima was diagnosed with mental illness in 2000 and has been recovering at his brother’s house. Mr. Ndima had raised his plea with CoJ Housing Department and the Ward councilor indicating that he is mentally challenged and lives in a depleted shack. On Tuesday, the Mayor handed keys to a brand new house to Ndima. The house has 2 bedrooms a kitchen and dining room.
The Mayor’s 120 Days of Service Delivery will continue in Ward 79 today. Today’s activity will be the conversion of open drains to sub-surface pipes at Freedom Drive.
