Attention Eskom Customers: the community is urged to recode their electricity meters by 24 November 2024. Failure to do so will result in your meter becoming inactive and unable to accept electricity tokens, disrupting your power supply.
If you’re an Eskom customer, it’s essential to buy a voucher from an Eskom-approved electricity outlet to complete the recoding process. Any meter not recoded by the 24th of November will stop functioning.
How to Check if Your Meter Needs Recoding
To find out if your meter has been recoded (upgraded to KRN2) or if it’s still on KRN1, follow these steps:
- Enter the code:
1844 6744 0738 4377 2416
on your prepaid meter’s keypad. - Check the display: The screen will show either the number 1 or 2.
- 1 – Your meter is still on KRN1 and needs to be recoded.
- 2 – Your meter has already been upgraded to KRN2. In some cases, there may also be alphabetic letters next to the KRN number.
Recoding Process
If your meter displays 1 and requires recoding, follow these instructions:
- Ensure you purchase a credit token slip from an authorised Eskom vendor.
- The slip will have three sets of 20-digit numbers:
- Step 1: Enter the “Old KRN1” 20-digit code and wait for confirmation.
- Step 2: Enter the “New KRN2” 20-digit code and wait for confirmation.
- Step 3: Enter your usual sales token 20-digit code.
Note: Do NOT enter the description max number on the slip.
Confirmation of Recoding
Once you’ve entered all the required codes, your meter should now be recoded to KRN2. You can verify this by entering the check code 1844 6744 0738 4377 2416
again. If it shows 2, your meter is successfully recoded. Additionally, your credit token slip will now display KRN2 when you purchase electricity.
