SPAZA SHOP CAMPAIGN COMES TO KAALFONTEIN

The South African Government’s nationwide campaign to register and ensure compliance of spaza shops made its way to Kaalfontein on 21 November 2024.

Spearheaded by City of Johannesburg Acting Mayor Eunice Mgcina, the initiative began at Yarona Shopping Centre and continued to the Kaalfontein Market in Ward 92.

Supported by municipal entities such as JMPD, EMS, and Environmental Health, the campaign combined inspections, education, and enforcement.

The operation included checks for expired goods, fire safety compliance inspections, and consumer education on food safety. Notices were issued to non-compliant operators, and one spaza shop was shut down for failing to meet required standards. The campaign emphasized the importance of adhering to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s directive for spaza shop registration within 21 days, set to conclude on 13 December 2024.

To facilitate compliance, Spaza Shop Registration Hubs have been established in the City of Johannesburg’s seven regions. For those in the Kaalfontein area, registration can be done at Lord Khanyile Hall in Ivory Park or the Rabie Ridge Community Centre. Spaza shop owners are encouraged to act promptly to avoid potential closures and contribute to improving food safety and business regulation standards in their communities.
