After a prolonged closure of more than two (2) years, Tembisa Plaza swung its doors wide open on Wednesday, 22nd November, marking a joyous and long-awaited return for the community.
The Mall was closed due to the July 2021 unrest that saw vandalism and looting. Lives were tragically lost and jobs lost.
The atmosphere on the day of the reopening was one of excitement and jubilation as community members flocked to embrace the revived heart of their neighborhood. Despite the past tragedies, the community’s spirits were high.
Notably, the plaza was now brimming with life, bustling with eager shoppers and families delighted to have their local anchor tenant, ShopRite, back in action. The transformation was undeniable – the mall boasted a fresh and revitalized appearance.
For many residents, the significance of the reopening extended beyond mere convenience. The absence of Tembisa Plaza had forced nearby community members to travel further to access essential services, often journeying to Birch Acres Mall or even the Mall of Tembisa. Now, with the plaza back in operation, the convenience of having a comprehensive shopping destination at their doorstep is a welcome relief.
Speaking to KAE News on condition of anonymity, a resident expressed heartfelt sentiments, stating,
“It was worth the wait. The Mall has been rebuilt. I also took part in the looting and I regret my actions. This thing of looting must never ever happen again. We missed our Tembisa Plaza.”
As the plaza resumes its operations, the hope and anticipation for a brighter future resonates among residents.
