UPDATE: TEMBISA HOSPITAL WILL NOT BE RECEIVING ANY PATIENTS UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

The Gauteng Department of Health has announced that Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital (TPTH) will not be receiving any patients and will remain on divert until further notice, following a fire that broke out at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit on Saturday, 19 April 2025.

According to a statement released by the Department, 79 patients were safely evacuated thanks to the swift response of hospital staff and emergency services.

The fire, which broke out in the afternoon, caused significant disruption to the Accident and Emergency Unit, though no injuries or casualties have been reported.

Emergency Medical Services from the City of Ekurhuleni and Gauteng EMS responded promptly, containing the fire and beginning mop-up operations. The team is currently assessing the extent of the physical damage and ensuring all patients affected are safely relocated.

The Department has assured the public that the fire only impacted the Accident and Emergency Unit, and all other hospital wards remain unaffected. However, for the safety of patients and staff, the facility will not accept new patients while investigations and repairs are underway.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and the public will be kept informed as updates become available.
