VOTING GUIDELINES FOR ELECTION DAY

YOU GET TWO BALLOT PAPERS:

The Ward ballot lists all the Ward Candidates alphabetically.

The Party Ballot is to determine how many PR (proportional representation) seats each party gets in Council.

Residents do not elect the mayor. The Mayor will be elected by newly elected councillors.

HOW IT WORKS OUT

In each Ward, the appointed Ward Councillor is the candidate with the most votes in that ward.

There are 135 wards in Johannesburg, and 270 seats in Council.

The number of PR seats per party is calculated as follows:

So, it is possible for a party not to win any wards but still have a substantial number of seats in Council.

Please remember to wear your mask, take your ID and a bring a pen with you.
