BUSINESS AS USUAL FOR TAXIS ON MONDAY
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have announced that they will be embarking on a National Shutdown on the 20th of March 2023. The party is demanding access to electricity and the resignation of President Cyril Ramaphosa. This comes after years of blackouts and load shedding in South Africa, which have had a devastating effect on businesses and the economy.
On Wednesday, the EFF met with the leadership of the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) in Pretoria to discuss their plans for the national shutdown. Despite SANTACO’s apolitical stance, the meeting was cordial and the views of both parties were respectfully welcomed. SANTACO even released a statement on Thursday, commending the EFF for briefing them on why their protest was justified.
However, the taxi industry body has stated that it will be operating as normal on the day of the national shutdown. SANTACO has maintained its apolitical stance but respects the reasons for the EFF’s protest. The body has also expressed a willingness to work together with the EFF to afford each other space in pursuit of diverse interests and intended objectives of the day.
It remains to be seen how effective the national shutdown will be, especially with the taxi industry operating as normal. However, it is clear that the EFF is determined to make its demands heard. Load shedding and power cuts have been a major issue in South Africa for years, and it is understandable that the EFF is demanding action to be taken.
KAE News will keep you updated on any further developments leading up to the national shutdown.
