A MEAL AT SCHOOL IMPROVES LEARNERS MARKS

Tembisa- This morning of the 28th of August 2019 the Deputy Minister of the Department of Education Reginah Mhaule launched the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) at Winnie Mandela Primary School in Tembisa.

The NSNP is a government programme ,in partnership with Pioneer Foods, that provides 1 nutritious meal to all learners in poorer primary and secondary schools. The objective is to provide nutritious meals to learners so as to improve their ability to learn in class.

The learners of the school prayed before the Deputy Minister served them with breakfast.

After the breakfast Mhaule addressed the children during assembly and told them about the importance of breakfast.

The school Principal Mr. Solomon Simango said that since the start of the roll out of NSNP programme they have noted some improvements in performance of learners academically.

Pioneer Foods CEO Tertius Carstens said “We serve breakfast to about 35000 kids across the country. Feedback on this programme confirms that absenteeism reduced ” and he made reference to the energy that was displayed by the kids after eating.

The Deputy Minister Mhaule concluded by saying the coffers of government are simply not enough and called on business to join and collaborate with government on the NSNP programme because education is a societal matter.
