The 38 year old teacher who is accused of raping a Grade 10 pupil at Umqhele Comprehensive School in Ivory Park handed himself over to the police on Wednesday morning.
The teacher has been on the run since last week Friday when he was busted by his colleague with a 16 year old learner inside the school’s premises during break time. The teacher handed himself over to the police at the Tembisa Police Station.
The teacher also tendered in his resignation. He made his first appearance on Thursday at the Thembisa Magistrate’s court on a charge of rape. The court case was attended by the Gauteng MEC of Education, Panyaza Lesufi.
“All educators and officials of the Gauteng department of education (GDE) have a sacrosanct duty of ensuring that learners placed in our care are safe and protected. Any educator or official who preys on learners has no place in the education system. We will continue to support the victim and all affected by this alleged incident. We can only imagine the anger and disappointment the family of the learner is going through following the betrayal of their trust by a person they had trusted.” said Lesufi.
The case was postponed to the 27th of May 2021 for a bail application.
