The Gauteng Department of Health has confirmed a case of Covid-19 in Alexandra. Five people who have been in close contact with the patient are currently under quarantine. The confirmed case was tested and instructed to remain under self isolation while awaiting results.

The patient disregarded the instruction and traveled to Limpopo before the national lockdown. Upon positive confirmation of the results, the Department’s team of tracers working with law enforcement traced the confirmed case in Limpopo.

All known close contacts have been identified, tested and are in quarantine awaiting results. The confirmed case is currently under isolation in a health facility in Limpopo.

The confirmed case in Alexandra comes after a confirmed case was recorded in Khayelitsha yesterday, 29 March 2020. Its a major concern for the coronavirus hitting townships.

Thousands of families live in very close proximity to one another in the township and some households have as many as seven to 10 people living together, making social distancing difficult.

Water and sanitation is also a major problem, with many houses that still don’t have adequate access and one block of communal toilets being shared between hundreds of residents.

Communities are urged to take heed of the lockdown regulations and stay home to contain the spread of the coronavirus. South Africa has 1,326 to date. In today’s announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa, the President emphasised that the coronavirus affects black and white, rich and poor, young and old.
