ESKOM APPOINTS DAN MAROKANE AS NEW CEO

Eskom has not had a Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for more than nine (9) months. This follows the resignation of the former CEO of the power utility, Andre De Ruyter, on the 23rd of February 2023.

The Eskom Board has finally announced the appointment of Dan Marokane as the new CEO of Eskom, effective no later than March 31, 2024.

Marokane, a qualified Chemical Engineer with an MBA, has over two decades of senior leadership experience and will be returning to Eskom following his previous suspension along with three (3) other senior executives after taking an ethical stand against state capture, fraud, and corruption.

Marokane brings extensive experience to Eskom, having worked in distressed organizations, particularly in turnaround mandates. His recent role at Tongaat-Hulett, where he took charge amidst financial distress after the CEO resigned, showcases his capability in managing challenging situations.

According to Eskom Board Chairman Mteto Nyati, Marokane’s appointment follows a thorough global recruitment process aimed at finding a candidate with strong leadership, vast experience, and a proven track record in the energy sector. Nyati expressed confidence in Marokane’s abilities, citing his proficiency in managing complex operational and commercial turnarounds in both public and private sectors.

“We are delighted to have him on board,” said Nyati.

The advertisement for the post attracted four hundred and nine (409) applications.
From this process, twelve (12) prospects qualified to further steps in the selection process.
