FIRST CORONAVIRUS DEATH IN GAUTENG

Gauteng Province has reported it’s first covid-19 related death today, 31 March 2020. The 79 year old male who had tested positive is the first covid-19 fatality in the province. Gauteng Province has the highest number of confirmed cases at 633 out of 1,353 in South Africa.

The deceased was admitted to a private hospital in Mogale City, West Rand on Saturday, 28 March 2020 and passed on yesterday, 30 March 2020. “I wish to convey our heartfelt condolences and express our collective grief to the friends and family of the deceased” said Premier David Makhura.

Meanwhile, the Provincial Command Council piloted the community-based testing and screening programme today in Alexandra township. This follows the directive by President Cyril Ramaphosa to deploy 10,000 fieldworkers to visit villages, towns and cities to screen residents with coronavirus symptoms.

The provincial government said the programme will be done in a systematic manner focusing in areas with the largest number of contacts as well as densely populated areas.
