IKAMVA YOUTH ENDING POVERTY THROUGH EDUCATION

IkamvaYouth SA provides a safe space for learners to be after class ends, where they receive help with their homework and a host of other services and support to ensure they succeed.

One of their branches is in The Siyakhula Centre, 49 Boshoff Street in President Park. Imkava Youth’s mission is to enable disadvantaged youth to pull themselves out of poverty and into tertiary education or employment.

Every year, IkamvaYouth anticipates its annual Winter School programme. Two weeks are reserved during the June – July holidays, to provide academic and non-academic support to the learners.

Nondumiso is one of the exceptional tutors in Ebony Park who is a few months away from obtaining her qualifications as a Chartered Accountant. She had the following to say about her experience at IkamvaYouth, “I believe that education is the key that unlocks the chains of poverty, and results in economic growth and stability. It is this belief that had me join IkamvaYouth to assist students to build a strong educational foundation that will empower them in whatever route they take after matric; be it higher education, entrepreneurship or employment.”

In Grade 12, Ikamva Youth ensures learners apply to at least three post-school opportunities, so they enroll in tertiary institutions, learnerships or jobs the following year. When these learners have their matric results, they ensure that they are actually placed in a post-school opportunity. Every learner is supported in applying for a place at a tertiary institution, an internship, or a job.

They also provide computer literacy and e-learning classes and during the winter school they partner with organisations to offer: health, leadership and life skills workshops and media, image and expression workshops.

To join Ikamva Youth programme there are no academic requirements for entry and participation is free of charge. However, in order to keep your place in the programme, you need to meet the attendance requirements.
