NATIONAL SHUTDOWN: 57 PEOPLE ARRESTED OVERNIGHT

The Economic Freedom Fighter’s (EFF) National Shutdown is currently underway today Monday, 20 March 2023, to demand access to electricity and call for the resignation of President Cyril Ramaphosa. Sporadic protest action is underway in parts of the country, with fires being reported in some areas.

According to the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, 57 people were arrested overnight, with Gauteng leading in the number of arrests. The police have also collected 24,300 tires across the country, which are typically used to barricade roads and set on fire during protests.

High police visibility has been reported in several areas, with police choppers roaming around to monitor the situation from the air.

The situation remains tense but normal, with reports of some protesters being arrested and subsequently released by the EFF in Braamfontein. While SANTACO, the South African National Taxi Council, has stated that it will be operating as normal on the day of the national shutdown, it is unclear how the ongoing protests will affect daily life and businesses.
