André de Ruyter, Eskom’s group chief executive, has reportedly resigned.

According to reports, De Ruyter has notified board chairperson Mpho Makwana of his decision earlier in the week. Makwana has also informed Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan.

Apparently, De Ruyter’s resignation could lead to the departure from Eskom of a number of other senior executives and engineers. Jan Oberholzer, De Ruyter’s number two and the chief operating officer, will also retire in April 2023.

The erstwhile Eskom CEO has been Eskom CEO for almost three (3) years and assumed the position on Christmas Day in 2019.

South Africa has been affected by unprecedented Loadshedding during his tenure as the CEO of the power utility.

Stage 5 Loadshedding is still underway until further notice.
