IVORY PARK FACES RISING MURDER

Ivory Park Police Station has been identified as one of the busiest police precincts in Gauteng, and the recently released crime statistics show that the area continues to face significant challenges when it comes to safety and security.

This is according to the latest crime statistics released by the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, on Friday, 17 February 2023. The crime stats covered the period from October until December 2023 and paint a worrying picture for Ivory Park and other communities in Gauteng.

A total of 7,555 people were murdered in South Africa in just three (3) months. This is an increase of 10,1% compared to the same period in 2021. On average, 3 to 4 victims murdered per hour in South Africa.

The crime stats reveal that Johannesburg Central (51) , Kagiso (47), Ivory Park (46), Hillbrow (43), and Tembisa (44) are the top five police stations in Gauteng with the highest number of reported murders.

The average number of murders per day in Ivory Park during the period under review is around 0.5, or one murder every two days. The Ivory Park policing precinct covers the areas of Ivory Park, Kaalfontein, Allandale and Ebony Park (KAE).

The top three causes of murder were arguments, mob justice, and robbery, suggesting that violence is escalating in some areas and that there may be underlying social and economic issues that need to be addressed.

Additionally, the number of assaults with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) has been increasing, with Ivory Park reporting the highest number of these cases in South Africa with 300 cases reported.

On a positive note, the data suggests that trio crimes have decreased in Ivory Park by 12.7%. Trio crimes are carjacking, house robbery and business robbery However, carjackings have increased in the area.

It is important for residents to be aware of these trends and take steps to protect themselves and their property, such as parking in well-lit areas and keeping doors locked.
