JOZI, MEET YOUR NEW MAYOR
City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality Councillors gathered at the newly named Constance Connie Bapele Chambers in Braamfontein on Friday, 1 October 2021.
This was for the 28th Extra-Ordinary Council Meeting in memory of the Late Executive Mayor, Jolidee Matonga and to elect the City of Johannesburg’s new Executive Mayor.
The Late Matonga tragically lost his life due to a car accident 2 weeks ago on the 18th of September. Matonga’s predecessor Geoff Makhubo lost his life due to COVID-19 complications in July.
The former MMC of Environment and Infrastructure Service and ANC JHB Regional Treasure, Cllr Mpho Moerane has been elected unopposed as the new Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg.
Moerane was born in Alexandra and matriculated at Minerva High School. Before joining the City of Johannesburg, Executive Mayor Moerane, grew up surrounded by entrepreneurs in his family and ran his own businesses.
The new mayor will serve a full month before the residents of Joburg go to the polls for the Local Government Elections on the 1st of November.
Moerane said in the 30 days that he would be in power, his main focus would be ensuring that communities received services.
He said his first priority will be to deal with electricity problems in Ivory Park amongst other townships.
“We started having a discussion between us as the City and national government who where led by public enterprises minister Pravin Gordhan and Eskom CEO André de Ruyter on 18 July 2020.
“We also brought to them the issue of taking over electricity provision as the City, and Eskom accepted and approved that they must transfer all these areas (under Eskom) with the City of Joburg to City Power,” said Moerane.
Ironically, Moerane previously worked for Eskom as an electrician.
Moerane will appoint his Members of Mayororal Commitee (MMCs) soon.
