Kaalspruit- One of the environmental issues that doesn’t get the attention that it deserves in our community is the water pollution in Kaalspruit.

Kaalspruit is the river that flows from Ebony Park to Kaalfontein. Kaalspruit also flows to Clayville, Olifantsfontein, Irene, and ultimately Hartbeespoort Dam. We need to intensify our efforts in educating the public that our rivers and streams are precious water resources that are under threat due to littering.

Water in the Kaalspruit could be dangerous to us as it contains unacceptable high levels of E.Coli. The water contains exceptionally high levels of general bacteria at 330 times higher than what is acceptable for river water.

This is owing to the sewage that is leaking into the water, the level of coliforms is 22 000 times higher than is acceptable.

As part of Mandela month and #ClearRiversCampaig we made efforts to clean Kaalspruit at Kaalfontein Ext 4B with the Department of Water & Sanitation, Fresh NGO and others. We are all responsible for our freshwater ecosystem and we need to safeguard and protect precious water resources.

Let us stop using the rivers and streams as dumping sites.
