WARD COMMITTEE ELECTIONS ON SATURDAY

Ward Committee Elections will be held on Saturday the 14th of May 2022 in Ward 111. Ward 111 voting stations are Ebony Park Primary School, Ebony Park; Ponelopele Oracle Secondary School, Kaalfontein and Umqhele Comprehensive School, Ivory Park.

Registered voters in the above voting stations will be eligible to vote for 10 Ward Committee Members to work with the current Ward Councillor, Cllr Nontutuzela “Dudu” Supe.

Ward Committees are democratically elected members of a specific Ward who are meant to promote community participation.

Their responsibility is to make the Municipality aware of the needs and concerns of residents and keep people informed of the activities of the municipality.

The 10 elected Ward committee members will be responsible for the following portfolios: Community Development 1 (Sports, Culture, and Youth), Community Development 2 (Women, Faith Based Groups, CBO and NGO’s), Housing, Transport, Public Safety, Economic Development and Finance, Infrastructure and Services, Environment, Health, Development Planning and Urban Management.

Our Editor-In-Chief and the founder of KAE News, Mr Douglas “Mdaka” Mjekula (31) is running for Ward Committee Member under the Community Development 1 portfolio which comprises of Sports, Youth and Culture.

Douglas Mjekula is an LLB graduateand and holds a Paralegal Diploma with the Paralegal School of South Africa.

On Sports:
Mjekula is the co-founder of the KAE Athletics club.

  • we will strive for “Loftus Ground” to be a Sporting District in our ward and encourage youth participation in football, aerobics, netball and other sporting codes.
  • we will formalise athletics in our ward. With sponsors onboard we will host a marathon tournament that will start at Loftus and cover parts of Rabie Ridge, Ivory Park, Kaalfontein and Allandale.
  • we will support organisations that promote a healthy lifestyle in our Ward by promoting these on our social media pages for free.
  • we will strive to maintain the Loftus Sports Ground as a suitable ground to play soccer and hold tournaments like Phillys Games in Tembisa.

On Youth:
Mjekula is the youngest candidate amongst the ComDev1 nominees in Ward 111.

  • promote and encourage youth owned businesses to participate in the township economy.
  • Foster entrepreneurship by assisting with company registrations.
  • Hold workshops with stakeholders to teach young people how to draft CVs, Cover Letters, assist in setting up LinkedIn Profiles and make vacancies accessible by posting job openings with the aim of decreasing the unemployment rate in our ward which currently stands at 55%
  • Working with SANCA in paypoint, increase intake of Nyaope addicts to receive drug rehabilitation and ensure they stay sober.
  • clampdown on unlicensed Liqour outlets and illegal taverns in Ward working together with law enforcement agencies.

On Culture:
We understand culture to mean Music, Drama, Fashion and Entertainment in general.

  • festivals of Arts and Culture being held at the Ward.
  • Showcase local talent (DJs, Musicians, Comedians etc)through our social media pages.
  • Hold KAE Awards annually to celebrate exceptional talent in Kaalfontein, Ebony Park and Ivory Park.

We will monitor progress of these above priorities and hold Mjekula accountable to successfully implement the above.
